The objectives of this article were to determine the influence of health region socio-economic context on the self-rated health of Canadians. At the individual level, the perception of fair or poor health was strongly associated with age, sex, socio-economic position (as measured by education and household income), smoking, obesity, and infrequent exercise. Overall, a handful of individual factors accounted for much of the variation between health regions in reporting of fair or poor health. There was an additional influence of socio-economic context on individual reporting of fair or poor health at the health region scale, but it was modest.
