Abstract : A chart comparing time series trends of Infant Mortality for both Canadians and First Nations (on reserve) shows an overall decrease for both populations. Between 1979 and 1999, Canada rates have fallen from 10.5 to 4.4 deaths per 1,000 live births when excluding those weighing less than 500 grams. When including those weighing less than 500 grams, the Canadian rates fell from 10.9 to 5.3 deaths per 1,000 live births. First Nations rates (which include those weighing less than 500 grams) are consistently higher than their Canadian counterparts. While experiencing some increases, overall the rate has dropped from 27.6 in 1979 to 10.9 in 1993. The data then was unavailable for a few years, but the most recent data shows the rate at 8.0 deaths per 1,000 live births in 1999.
