Real per capita hospital expenditure exhibits a striking age pattern. Expenditure per capita in 2002 was $5,193 and $4,619, respectively, for male and female infants under one year of age. The only other age group to reach and exceed that level is the 85 and older group. Expenditures per capita for both sexes remain under $1,000 until after the 45-64 age group, when they begin to increase rapidly. Hospital expenditures per capita are higher for males than for females throughout the senior age groups. This is not counter-intuitive, since for cardiovascular disease, which is the leading cause of deaths in Canada and by far, the disease category with the highest hospital cost, morbidity is more prevalent for males than for females.
